Sèvres Porphyry Ground Tea Service with Chinoiserie Scenes

This rare tea service is modeled in the “à bandeau” form, referring to its continuous banded design, and features a distinctive dark red porphyry ground with fine gilt crazing. Variations in the intensity of the glaze and gilding reflect the hand-finished quality of each piece. This porphyry finish was fashionable in the 1790s, with related examples found at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Louis-François Lécot, a principal Sèvres painter of chinoiserie decoration, began applying whimsical Chinese figure scenes to vases and tea services around 1774. These decorative themes were especially popular during the years 1774–1777 and experienced a resurgence during the French Revolution, around the time this service was produced. The charming polychrome scenes are naïve and imaginative, showing Chinese figures engaged in various leisure activities.
On 13 Vendémiaire, Year III of the French Republic (October 4, 1794), factory ledgers record Lécot painting a tea set of six “gobelets à bandeau,” a teapot, milk jug, and sugar bowl described as “chinois et fond r” (Chinese figures with red ground). This is the only known surviving example of that service.
