Sèvres "Three Gilt Cameo Putti" Cup and Saucer
Sèvres,1814
Sèvres, 1814
Mark: interlaced blue “L” and “Sèvres” (1814)
Dimensions: cup height approx. 7.8 cm; rim diameter approx. 9.3 cm; saucer diameter approx. 14.5 cm
This cup and saucer set was produced by the Sèvres Manufactory in 1814 and exemplifies the refined aesthetics of the Empire period. The form is that of a first-size “tasse jasmin d’enfant”, with an elegant flaring profile and high foot. The entire surface is richly decorated with raised gilding (fond d’or), in a palette combining deep hues and complex ornamental schemes that reflect the architectural rigor and imperial symbolism of the era.
The primary ground color is an intense imperial purple (pourpre impérial), contrasted by emerald green elliptical medallions and silver-blue laurel garlands, creating dynamic chromatic contrasts and a pronounced sense of depth. The decoration follows a tripartite “cameo” layout, evoking carved stone or mounted jewels.
Each of the three medallions depicts a gilded putto engaged in symbolic activities — blowing a horn, pouring wine, and playing a lyre — representing Glory, Celebration, and the Arts. Each scene is crowned with a raised green enamel flower and framed with silver-toned laurel leaves, evoking classical honorific emblems.
The decorative intervals between the medallions are filled with typical Empire-style motifs, such as eagles with spread wings, Corinthian capitals, scrolling acanthus, lion masks, and suspended drapery, all rendered in a mix of matte and burnished gold and silver. The lower body of the cup features a band of vertical gadroons, alternating in purple and gold, reinforcing the verticality and rhythm of the design.
The cup interior is entirely gilded. The handle is modeled in a classical architectural style with graceful curves and solid balance. The composition achieves harmony between materials, color, iconography, and form — a consummate example of early 19th-century Sèvres artistry under the influence of Empire aesthetics.
According to the 1814 archives of the Sèvres manufactory, this model was recorded as “tasse et soucoupe ornements reliefs fond d’or” and was delivered to Mr. V. Hedemann, noted as mayor (major).
Condition: Excellent overall condition. Slight rubbing at the center of the saucer. The gilding remains bright and the colors rich.
