A Sèvres (hard-paste) porcelain black-ground chinoiserie cup and saucer
Circa 1795
Cup: height and diameter 6.8 cm
Saucer: diameter 14 cm (5½ in.)
Iron-red script Sèvres mark; painter’s mark “X”, likely for Jean-François Micaud père
This finely painted hard-paste porcelain cup and saucer from the Sèvres manufactory is decorated in the chinoiserie taste, with a rare black ground and richly gilded scenes.
The cup depicts a foreground figure being carried in a litter, with others conversing in a landscape beyond. The saucer features a deep landscape scene of figures practicing archery, surrounded by additional vignettes of Chinese-inspired activities. The execution in gold is particularly fine, both in detail and balance.
The painter’s mark “X” likely corresponds to Jean-François Micaud père, known for his exceptional gilt chinoiserie decoration on Sèvres porcelain in the late 18th century.
